Rudy and River Puppies at 1.5 weeks old
Lots of people ask me about the Aussies getting along with Cats. Part of puppy training is teaching them to be nice to family members including cats. If you start when they are little the cats are no big deal as they grow up. I've even gotten full-grown Aussies that wanted to seriously hurt cats when they first arrived and now they are nice to them all. Just took some training. Kelly in this video is a Rudy and River Puppy. We also have her grandparents and great grandparents on her Mom's side all here on the ranch.
I modify this room a few times as they grow. For example adding the puppy safety rail which gives puppies an escape route if Mom lays on them by accident, or putting in indoor/outdoor carpet the first 4 weeks so they have good traction to walk on. Around 5 weeks old I teach them to use the doggie door and they start going potty outside which is a wonderful day :) Aussie puppies are very smart, if the weather is too hot or cold they hang out in the climate controlled area inside. It was important to me to have an indoor/outdoor setup with a doggie door like this. I want Mom to have the freedom to go outside or go potty when she needs/wants to during the entire process.
